Julian Scott, Civil War Artist, Revealed
Friday, September 5, 7:00pm at the
Cultural Arts Center

Judd Scott presents the life and work of his great nephew, Julian Scott, a renown Civil War artist and recipient of the Medal of Honor. Julian Scott was the first individual to be awarded the Medal of Honor when he was only 16, serving as a drummer boy in the Union Army. Previous Medals of Honor were awarded only to military units. Julian sketched war scenes during his service and after the war he became a praised civil war artist. He was the only such artist to paint directly from war experience. He also became an artist of Indian culture and an Indian census counter. Judd, an accomplished career artist in his own right, has a collection of Julian's art which will be on display at the Old Jail Art Museum, after the presentation, Friday, September 5. The exhibit will also be open Saturday, September 6, from 10:30 to 3:00.

Jack, his wife Betsy and their friend Mary Lou Russell recently retraced a journey through Russia that the Cooks made 15 years ago, soon after the break-up of the Soviet Union. Betsy has a long standing fascination with Russia, as the home of some of her ancestors. The trip this summer was taken aboard a small river-going vessel carrying 200 passengers. The voyage began in Moscow, traveled via rivers and lakes through the Russian heartland and ended with a few days in baroque St. Petersburg.

All FCAA members and their guests are invited to bring a dish to share and enjoy being transported to a strikingly different and fascinating country.
